Master Class with Andrew Mayo

CREATING (OR RENEWING) A LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY
Based on his best selling book, Andrew Mayo will take you systematically through a methodology for building a strategy that ensures we are doing the right things for our organisation. The first question to answer is "what should we deliver?" and the second is "how will we deliver the learning ?"

The L&D Manager usually has more options and demands for providing learning events than resources allow. Strategy is about choices – how should the choices be made? Based on his best selling book, Andrew Mayo will take us systematically through a methodology for building a strategy that ensures we are doing the right things for our organisation. The first question to answer is “what should we deliver?” and the second is  “how will we deliver the learning ?“
The business strategy dictates some essential capabilities that people in the organisation must have, and we place this alongside what we believe about learning itself – whether we want to be a “learning organisation” or whether we want to be more pragmatic and just provide training as needed. These beliefs must be those of senior management of course; not merely of the L&D group. On top of this, we can add the programs and initiatives that support specific, current, business objectives. Participants will learn and experiment with a consulting methodology that enables them to derive learning goals from business goals – and to prioritise them.
All this provides the answer to “what” should we be doing? The question of “how”? leads to the strategy for professional delivery. We will look at the options we have in managing learning.  It won‘t just be in terms of formal programs but will also embrace a variety of learning processes and interventions at both the organisational and individual level. We will think of learning in a systemic way – with many stakeholders and contributors – and their roles, responsibilities and capabilities.
Finally we will address the effectiveness of what we do. How do we assess the return for the initiatives that we undertake? What other measures  should we use to track the contribution we make? How indeed do we measure the increase in “capabilities” , which is the main object of our endeavours?

This master class will utilise practical illustrations and also provide an opportunity to apply key principles to the organisations of participants. It is ideal for both L&D practitioners and HR directors and partners who are concerned to be business driven, strategic in their approach, and to be adding real measurable value to their organisations.
